the midst of a valley which cultiva-tion has turned into a garden, Malang affords at theend of every street the splendid panorama of themountains. The aloun-aloun, waringins and mango andbreadfruit-trees growing along its borders or scatteredin groups in the open, is surrounded by the AssistantResidency, the Regency, the mosque, the necessarypublic buildings, the church, and all the signs of or-ganised and official life ; the native and Chinese kampongshang upon the outskirts of this aristocratic quarter,making the suburbs of the town, so that the eye enjoysthem while the sense of smell escapes offence. The prosperity of Malang dates from the cultivationof the entire district, which is one of the most fertile inJava. In 1808 it contained about thirty thousand inhabi-tants ; to-day there are half a million, most of whom areoccupied in planting and harvesting coffee and sugar-cane, and to these we must add, at the period of harvest,a floating population of nearly a hundred thousand mm^i
